We are so excited that the Featherweight kits are already making their way through the mail to your door. As such, we thought it would be perfect timing to show you how we applied the fussy cut instructions for the black and gold fabric. This fabric will be used for the bottom binding as well as the seam bindings along the two panel edges. Moreover, one of our sweet gals here in the shop went the extra mile to show another alternate method for constructing the kit. She did beautiful work and took photos along the way, and we hope either of these methods will help you as you construct your "Fanny the Featherweight Dust Cover Kit", too!
Fussy Cut Method #1:
For Bottom Band: Fussy cut five (5) strips of the Singer fabric (Fabric C) as shown in the photo above and according to pattern instructions for width. Sew ends together (pressing seams open to reduce bulk) until you have at least the required 55" length strip. This will make the proper piece for your bottom band.
For Binding Strip: After fussy cutting your strips, you will be left with a 12" x 25" piece of black and gold fabric for Fabric C. Use this piece to cut your remaining 1 1/2" binding strips. Sew the ends together until you end up with a 90" binding strip. This will be used for binding the seams along both panel edges.
Alternate Method #2 and Construction Photos:
Arlene was very gracious to take the kit home and from beginning to end show us her unique way of cutting and sewing the cover together. Instead of fussy cutting the "Singer" words for her bottom band, she used the decals from the actual kit panel. Arlene is also a very accomplished long-arm quilter and quilted the cover using a darling little sewing machine motif -- it's it cute!?
We hope these next alternate instructions will give you some fresh inspiration as you sew your kit together!
To begin, cut decals strips from the panel piece before you quilt your cover pieces; they will be
approximately 1 1/2" wide. Continue with pattern as instructed for cutting and quilting.
Per instructions cut out the quilted panel pieces.
Instead of cutting fabric C by length of fabric we cut
by width of fabric (3) 1 1/2" strips. These will still be used for
the top and side edges of the cover. They don't need to be
sewn together to form one long strip.
Sew two red panels together per instructions. Then bind with
one of the strips above.
The following three photos show binding prep per the instructions.
Bind similarly as you would bias tape.
Trim binding flush with the red panel piece.
(*Refer back to above steps to add binding along the panels and gusset.)
Next, follow pattern instructions
from step 2. Below are photos of the process.
Pin both Featherweight panels to gusset before sewing, easing in.
Trim if necessary any excess gusset material.
(Arlene didn't have any excess to trim.)
Sew the two decal panel strips together with a diagonal seam.
Shifting the pieces
of fabric will allow you to match two of the decal elements for a
seamless appearance. See finished seam photo below.
Prepare your binding the same as you did for the top and side binding
and attach in the same way. Refer to step 6 where it says:
Begin at the back of cover....
Please note this is a narrower binding edge than shown
on the cover of your pattern, but it is still deep enough
to cover your Featherweight.
