Top 10 Featherweight Favorites for 2020
Welcome to 2020! It is going to be a wonderful year, filled with many hours behind our Featherweights! I have compiled a "Top 10" list of tools that have helped not just the Featherweight Shop staff, but our Featherweight Friends achieve dream projects on their Featherweights. I hope you enjoy these favorites, and the tutorials that go along with them!
SEW-RETRO Grease is our top pick for 2020! Proper maintenance allows the Featherweights to run as smoothly and optimally as possible. SEW-RETRO GreaseTM has been specially formulated with the proper melting point and lubricating qualities for vintage & antique sewing machines, including the Singer Featherweight 221 & 222K... some attachments need grease sometimes, too! SEW-RETRO GreaseTM is appropriate for any and all sewing machines with all-metal gears. (Do not use this lube with any plastic or nylon gears.)
Following up to SEW-RETRO Grease, sewing machine oil is a close second! Sewing Machine Oil has numerous uses. One drop of oil at all oiling points is all that is needed for every 8-hours of sewing. It is also a good idea to give one tiny drop of oil to the bobbin race (two small rectangular holes behind the bobbin case) every time you change a bobbin or sit down to sew. If you follow along to our Restore Along blog, you will see just how important it is use Sewing Machine Oil!
You can't complete your best work without the proper tools! Schmetz needles are a long standing staple at the Featherweight Shop!
Microtex (Sharp & Chrome) feature a very slim, acute point and fits the Singer Featherweight 221 and 222 perfectly. Use them for microfibers, polyester, silk, foils, artificial leather, coated materials, but most of all for quilt piecing when precision is paramount. Helps create beautiful topstitching and perfectly straight stitches.
(Change your needle with every new sewing project or when you begin to hear the "pop, pop, pop" sound as the needle goes in and out of the fabric.)
Have you tried to get a "caught thread" out from behind a bobbin case? It isn't a matter of "if" you get a thread caught behind the bobbin case, but "when"... and having the right tool to remove it when that happens will ease any frustration and get you back to sewing in no time! (You'll impress your quilting friends, too!)
The all-metal, Thread-O-Stat Thread Grabber has a smooth jaw, so the thread is gripped tightly and securely as you clamp the handles together. Unlike a typical "hemostat" which has a toothed or jagged jaw (preventing a firm grip), the Thread-O-Stat is more like tweezers, only better! You will be able to grab a hold of that little thread as you take the proper steps to remove it and the Thread-O-Stat won't let go! The Thread-O-Stat is also quite helpful for removing paper from the back of your paper-piecing projects, or turning things right side out, whatever you need to grab in a tight spot - an all around handy tool to have in your sewing room!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this Case Tote! It has made a world of difference to the gals, and myself, at the Featherweight Shop. Moving and traveling with our machines is seamless with these new totes. We just put the case in the tote and use these adorable totes as we would our purses!
This canvas Featherweight Case Tote Bag is ideal for carrying your Featherweight in its case! It also protects your case exterior or if your case has a compromised handle or even clasps or latches missing, this will make it easier to carry. You might even choose to fill your bag instead with fabric, quilt kits, bundles, rulers, pattern books, maintenance & servicing tools, manuals, accessories, or even a quilt! Case Tote comes in Black, as well as two vintage style colors Jade-ite Green, and Betty's Strawberry Pink.
No more burning hands, and so much more light! Replacement "push-in" style L.E.D. light bulb for the Singer Featherweight 221 and 222K as well as many other vintage Singer models. Better = brighter, truer, longer lasting and will not burn! Available in either the WHITE Light or WARM Light or BRIGHT WHITE (as the most popular color!)
Sewing an accurate seam on your Featherweight project is a must. Featuring the darling gold decals on a black or clear surface to match the classic Featherweight design, achieve consistent, accurate seams each time you sew!
In 2019, we released the Featherweight Accurate Seam Square, to partner up with the Accurate Seam Guide! As noted by our Featherweight Friends, this new addition has made the perfect pair to the Accurate Seam Guide!
The Featherweight Accurate Seam Square simplifies seam accuracy. Achieve a proper seam allowance fast and easy by lowering the tip of the needle through hole of the desired seam width then use the square to align the edge of the Featherweight Accurate Seam Guide (sold separately). Fasten the seam guide in place and your seam allowance guide is set. Raise machine needle and be ready to sew!
The Open-Toe Quarter Inch 1/4" foot is an excellent tool for Scant 1/4-inch seams and provides greater visibility for stitching half-square triangle (HST) as well as paper piecing.
We love the specially designed, Featherweight Shop Thread Cutterz! This little tool makes such a big impact on our sewing routine! Incredibly sharp, simple and well... cute for the Singer Featherweight! Be sure to watch the video tutorial below, because we are super excited to debut the Featherweight Shop's edition of Thread Cutterz! These are truly over and above what the vintage original thread cutter can do. Plus, we love how Thread Cutterz* perfectly captured the design elements of our beloved little sewing machine with the black and gold styling of the Singer Featherweight.
