NOVICE Routine Maintenance Workshop:

Every well-made sewing machine, including the Singer Featherweight, can be maintained to run easily and to sew perfectly.  For easy running of the machine, a Featherweight must be clean, well-oiled and properly adjusted or serviced.  For perfect sewing, certain adjustments such as threading, tensions, and stitch formation must be correct.

This all day, comprehensive workshop teaches Featherweight owners how to service and maintain their own Singer Featherweight on a regular basis. These machines were engineered with simplicity in mind — not just for easy portability, but also designed so that owners could service and maintain their own little sewing machine themselves.

Workshop Class members will learn:

  • Featherweight Historical Overview
  • Oiling & Lubricating
  • Tension Adjustments
  • Electrical Components
  • Stitch Formation
  • Cleaning & Polishing
  • Case Refurbishing
  • Attachment Identification
  • Troubleshooting

Basic oiling is important, but proper care and servicing of the Featherweight requires much more. Carmon, the Featherweight Technician, will teach participants how to give their machines the standard service – regularly!  The Workshop more than pays for itself because you won’t have to pay for routine maintenance again!  (You’ll even learn how to get that worn-out-looking Featherweight Case looking beautiful again!)

Machine mechanical knowledge is not a prerequisite, so you needn’t worry about having maintenance experience.  Carmon's kind approach puts all students at ease as he gently guides each student through every step.

Advanced Maintenance Workshop:

The Advanced Course is designed for those who have already taken the Novice course and are now wanting to work on sewing machines as a hobby or for those wishing to acquire more extensive troubleshooting skills when servicing the Singer Featherweight machine. You will be learning how to service a problem Featherweight or one that is not quite in perfect sewing order.  This contrasts the Novice Maintenance course where we just cover routine maintenance and service.  In the Advanced Course we will sometimes be working as a group around one machine, with each student having the ability to apply what they're learning to their machine at the class.

Advanced Workshop Class members will learn:

  • Machine Mechanics & Stitch Formation
  • Understanding the Hook Assembly
  • Timing
  • Needle Dynamics
  • Tension Unit Dis-Assemble & Re-Assemble
  • Faulty Parts
  • Troubleshooting
  • Q & A

*Regular maintenance with oiling and lubrication is not covered in the advanced course, therefore the Novice Workshop (or equivalent) is required to attend the Advanced Workshop.

Due to space limitations all participants are required to have registration fees paid prior to the class.  Please limit one machine per person. (Spouses are welcome to attend as an observer, however, he or she will need to attend the class as a paid participant.  If you have a 2nd Featherweight, let your spouse service it for you!)

Refunds:

Due to advance scheduling, traveling times, and waiting lists, class fees are non-refundable and credits toward future classes are not eligible.  However, should an unforeseen circumstance arise, and you are not able to attend, you may transfer your registration date to a friend or relative.  *The exception to this is if the class day you are scheduled for gets cancelled due to a minimum class size requirement -- then a full refund will be provided.
