Thread Jam Removal Tool, COMMON SIZE for Singer Featherweight 221, 222, & 301
Free a Jammed Handwheel—Without Risking Your Machine
When the handwheel suddenly won't turn, the most common culprit is a bit of thread caught—and often hidden—behind the bobbin case base. It isn't anything you did wrong; it happens to every Featherweight eventually. Whatever you do, don't force the machine—forcing is how a simple jam becomes severe, costly damage to the hook assembly.
This clever little tool clears the jam instead. It fits over the bobbin case base and lets you spin it freely until the trapped thread drops out or is cut by the tiny teeth inside—all without taking the hook assembly apart. No forcing, no risk—just a quick spin and you're back to sewing!
How to Use It
- Remove the needle throat plate.
- Place a towel between the faceplate and bed extension, then stand the machine on its handwheel end.
- Insert the Thread Jam Removal Tool over the bobbin case base post, ensuring it sits flush against the base.
- While holding the handwheel, turn the tool clockwise until there is no resistance.
- Inspect the bobbin case base for any thread that may have been expunged—it is often a very small piece.
- Reinstall the needle throat plate, making sure the positioning finger is in the gap on the underside of the throat plate.
Does It Fit?
This common-size tool is designed for universal use on Singer 221, 222, and 301 vintage hook assemblies—it fits most all Featherweight 221 models as well as 222 hook assemblies. The early Featherweights from 1933 and 1934 had a different hook assembly and require a different tool: click here for the Early Oval Thread Jam Tool.
Hook assembly is not included—it appears in photos for demonstration and comparison only. It may be purchased separately here.
NOTE: Because this is a tool to be used, the Thread Jam Tool is not returnable.
