DIY Quilt at The Featherweight Shop ~ Part 3

diyblueandcream

Welcome back to the "Do It Yourself" Sew Along! I don't know about you, but I love it when I get to the part of seeing the fabric combinations coming together. I have been looking forward to this particular quilt pattern and fabric combination for some time now. The mellow cream offset by the timeless blues is so delicate! I just can't wait to see how it all turns out.

If you are just joining us, welcome! Read DIY Vintage Patchwork Part 2 Here. Last week we prepared all our squares, ready to create our Quarter Square Triangles (QST). Grab your favorite fall treat (mine is warm apple cider!), compile your fabrics, and let's get started!

First off, remember to check your seams with the Featherweight Accurate Seam Square and Featherweight Accurate Seam Gauge! This has helped me tremendously keep all of my seams to a scant 1/4" evenly throughout my sewing - and they are so straight!

Please note that I cut all of my fabric from yardage to create my dream vintage inspired blue and cream star quilt. I used the following "recipe" below!

At this point, your squares should measures roughly 3 7/8" each. From experience, the initial cutting of your fabrics will impact just how accurate the pieced HST (Half Square Triangle) will be. Taking the time upfront will lead to more accuracy with your points in the later steps!
(It is okay not to be perfect, sometimes life happens! When kids and dogs are running around, it is easy to get distracted. Enjoy each step, even the tedious ones!)

Take two HST, right sides together, placed opposingly like you are making an "X" in the center. Align your corners.

Next, take your Creative Grids Itty Bitty Eights (LOVE this ruler!) and draw a line with Sewline Water Erasable Magic Ballpen from one corner to the other diagonally, making sure you are crossing the seam in the center, creating the "X."

My pen line is very faint, but you can see it going directly down the center. Pin both sides so the fabric does not shift.

Taking your Presser Foot, stitch a scant 1/4" on each side of the drawn line.

By sewing on each side, this creates a seam for two Quarter Square Triangles. Taking your
Creative Grids Itty Bitty Eights Ruler and Olfa Rotary Cutter, cut down the centerline that was previously drawn.

You should now have two triangles! Open them up and see your beautiful Quarter Square Triangles. Press your seam open with Quilter's Pressing Fleece and a hot iron.

Have fun mixing prints or keep them all the same! I chose to keep my colors matching for this specific quilt.

See you Monday, November 15th for the next installment of the Do It Yourself Sew Along Part 4!
