How to Align the +/- Indicator Ring on the Tension Unit

This quick video will show you how to make a tension unit post adjustment. If the +/- indicator ring at the top of your tension unit is sitting a bit off center on your Singer Featherweight 221 or 222K, then this tutorial will walk you through the steps for how to get it properly aligned again.

Damaged in Shipment

The following photos will show you what happens when a Singer Featherweight is not properly packed.  If you are an eBay, Etsy, or shopgoodwill online seller and you are shipping a Singer Featherweight across the country or even across the oceans, please take these warnings seriously.  Replacement parts are expensive and sometimes exact originals cannot be found (e.g. white and tan featherweight bobbin winders, spool pins, early case designs, etc.).  Over the years we have emailed many online sellers our photo tutorial for how to pack and ship a Singer Featherweight properly.  Still, a few of them did not heed...

Packing & Shipping a Singer Featherweight Properly

Packing a Singer Featherweight seems like it would be simple enough, doesn’t it?  After all, it comes with a handy carrying case, right?  Well, I think after you see the photographed illustrations below you will understand that these small, portable machines need a bit more care than what you might expect.  After years and years of seeing machines shipped with damage (and having to help some of our customers replace those parts), we created this tutorial to help you and others learn how to pack a Singer Featherweight 221 and 222 properly.  This information can apply to other portable sewing...

How to Use the Singer Buttonholer Attachment

Beautiful, perfect and easy! ‘Sew’ easy in fact, it’s practically hands-free! Believe me, this buttonholer is still preferred by long-time sewists, even over the fancy, expensive machines with built-in buttonhole features. It’s amazing how the technology of yesterday still holds true all these decades later. Part 2 of the video shows you how to make an eyelet hole - perfect for when you want to add a little hole to the Dresden Spool Pin Plate (free pattern). Designed fit for the low, vertical shank Singer Sewing Machine (i.e. 15, 66, 99, 127, 128, 185, 192, 201, 221 & 222 Featherweight,...

How to Adjust the Handwheel

If your Singer Featherweight 221 or 222K has a needle that won't stop going up and down and still moves when winding a bobbin, then most likely your handwheel needs an adjustment inside. This easy to follow video tutorial not only shows you how to fix the annoying problem but explains the process of how your stop-back-motion knob works.  Wind a bobbin with no needle movement, once again.

Foot Pedal Controller Speed Adjustment

If your Singer Featherweight 221 foot controller (aka foot pedal) has only one speed (fast) OR is getting way too hot, then it might just need a simple adjustment inside. Watch this video tutorial for how to calibrate and make the necessary adjustment and to keep your machine operating safely. But wait, there's more -- immediately after posting this video to our Singer Featherweight 221 Facebook Group, we received the question about a light that flickers on and off when the foot controller is depressed. So, we decided a 2nd video was needed in addition to the first one....

How to Clean Under the Bobbin Case Spring

This is just a quick video we made for a customer who had questions about the bobbin case tension. This tutorial will help teach you how to clean lint out from under the bobbin case spring with a pin as well as how to do the bobbin case "yo-yo" test. This test is not foolproof and can sometimes vary depending on how much force is used in the process, but it can certainly help in a pinch when trying to set the bobbin case tension. For the most accurate setting, please see our updated tutorial here.

How to Fix a Stuck Hook Assembly

After removing the hook assembly screws on a Singer Featherweight 221 sometimes the assembly will still remain stuck on the shaft. This quick tip will help you remove it easily without damage to your machine or that expensive original part... just be sure to watch all the way to the end of the video for complete instructions and explanation.

Featherweight Timing (and how to replace the Gib Hook)

In this video tutorial, Carmon Henry gives the step-by-step process for how to set the hook timing on a Singer Featherweight.  Timing is almost never an issue on a Singer Featherweight 221 or 222.  What that means is -- that it is virtually impossible for a Featherweight to get out of time just from normal, everyday use.  This only happens if someone has disassembled, changed or wanted to adjust any of the assembly rotations or shaft positions, even by accident. This tutorial includes removal of the entire hook assembly as well as reassembly and timing of the sewing machine hook....

How to Fix Terminal Receptacle Pins for Better Connection

How to Fix Terminal Receptacle Pins for Better Connection   A common question we receive has to do with the Featherweight plug being too loose in the receptacle. Watch the short video above to see what to do should this ever occur with one of your Featherweight machines. My Featherweight friend, Brad Sawatwipachai, was a great help in preparing this hint for video presentation. Receptacles that no longer have a sufficient center gap in the pins can cause the light to flicker or the motor to lose power. To remedy this problem, you will need a flat screwdriver. Your machine...

Fixing a Broken Motor Cap Screw

Broken Motor Cap Screw This Featherweight Hint has been provided to us by Brad Sawatwipachai.  Brad is a friend and Featherweight collector in Ontario, Canada.  He recently hosted his first Featherweight Maintenance Workshop and posted photographs of something he had to remedy while in his class.  This has been something we have had to do as well, so we thought it would be good timing to feature Brad and bring another hint to you.   Each Singer Featherweight Motor has two motor cap screws.  The one on the top of the motor and one underneath (the one underneath is accessed...

Putting Your Machine Away

This Featherweight hint is actually a simple one but could save you some heartache just by being conscientious and a little bit careful with your Bakelite Terminal Receptacle. Did you know there is a proper way to put your Singer Featherweight away into your case?  Indeed there is.  Time and time again we have seen machines that have cracked or broken electrical terminals and usually, the cause is how the machine was put away in its case.   The electrical terminal as shown in these photos is made of Bakelite and becomes brittle with age.  So, if the terminal happens...

Learning About Motor Felt Wicks

There has been much talk about motor lubricating lately, including many that are advocating not lubricating the motor at all.  I am not sure where this advice started, whether it began because the later white Featherweight motors do not have lubricating ports, or if it was from those warning against using sewing machine oil in your motor. (To be sure, sewing machine oil should never be put inside a motor, because oil will destroy it.) Regardless of where the advice started, not lubricating any motor that was designed to be lubricated is very bad advice. There are two places that...

How to Fix a Floppy Bed Extension

For today’s hint, we will be discussing a floppy Featherweight bed.  This remedy is quick and easy and will keep your bed from flopping down too fast. (Note: This only applies to black and tan Featherweight Machines.  Singer cut a few manufacturing corners when they made the White Featherweights and how the bed attaches to the machine base was one of them.  Instead of screws, they used pins.  Thus, it makes it more difficult to adjust the bed’s position.) So, how do you fix that floppy bed?  Removing the screw from your machine bed, reposition the flat washer and cupped...

How to Change a Singer Featherweight Light Bulb

For those of you who do not have local access to a hardware store or don't want to drive all over town trying to locate the right tubing product, we do carry them in the shop as a convenience to our customers: Many of you have probably tried and found that the area where the light bulb goes is hard to get into. I actually learned this from Dave McCallum several years ago and have been applying it ever since. To make this easier and to easily see the bulb, it may be best to set the machine up on...

How to Use the Singer Style-O-Matic Attachment

The SINGER Style-O-Matic Attachment with 17 Different Finishes all in one Attachment.  Singer introduced this amazing little gadget in 1934 and after that, it has been referenced in very, very few publications and advertisements.  A very short-lived attachment - making it a very scarce collectible today. Yes, my Stitchery Friends, this Attachment is very scarce to find! The SINGER Style-O-Matic Attachment with 17 Different Finishes all...
