Your Dream Quilting Vacation Awaits
Overview
Join The Featherweight Shop team and fellow enthusiasts at the Grand Wailea, a five-star Waldorf Astoria resort on Maui's sunny south shore, for our very first tropical land-based sewing retreat. You'll settle into one welcoming home base for five unhurried nights.
Hosted by The Featherweight Shop, this retreat runs November 8–13, 2027 with an intimate group of just 36 quilters. We've structured the days to allow for both dedicated sewing time as well as free time to explore the island. Sew to your heart's content in our private retreat room, then step out for a beach walk, a spa afternoon, or a sunset luau. The rhythm is yours to set!
(Prefer different dates? We're hosting a second, identical retreat November 8–13, 2027.)
Dedicated Sewing-Room Time
Settle in at a fully serviced Featherweight in our private retreat room and stitch the day away, with friends at every table and expert help close at hand. You decide how much of each day you spend sewing and how much you spend savoring Maui.

Step outside into lush tropical gardens and open lawns: a lovely place to stretch your legs between sewing sessions, sketch a new design, or simply breathe in the island air.

The resort's open-air lounges and beachfront terraces are made for gathering. Meet up with fellow quilters for a morning coffee, an afternoon chat, or to watch the sun slip into the Pacific.

A wide crescent of golden sand fronts the resort, with loungers and cabana service for guests. It's the perfect spot to relax, toes in the sand, before heading back to your machine.

One of Hawaiʻi's most elaborate pool complexes with nine pools across six levels, seven waterslides (including the three-story Lava Tube), waterfalls, caves, and the world's only water elevator.

A tranquil adults-only (18+) pool with Jacuzzis, cabanas, and shaded seating—for when you'd like a quieter spot to unwind.

Fitness Center & Wellness Classes
A state-of-the-art fitness center for guests who like to keep their routine — plus fresh-air fitness classes held out on the lawn and down on Wailea Beach, with the ocean right there. Beach yoga, Pilates, and more, included with your stay.

Your Nightly Dining Credit
Every guest—quilters and companions alike—receives a $125 food & beverage credit each night to spend throughout the resort, from a beachfront dinner at Humuhumu to a casual lunch at the Surf Haus. Savor Maui's flavors on your own schedule, with the credit easing the way. (That's $625 total value per guest during your five-night stay.)

Discover the Island Between Stitches
Explore Maui
The Grand Wailea sits on Maui's sunny southwest shore, with the island's best beaches, gardens, and views just minutes away. Roam as much or as little as you like.
Ready to explore? The resort's concierge can help you arrange excursions, tours, and transportation—just ask at the desk. Or you can browse and book Maui activities yourself, from snorkel trips to island tours and luaus, on Viator. (The Featherweight Shop doesn't handle individual bookings, but we're glad to point you to everything nearby.)
A few more island favorites worth the trip: the Road to Hāna, a famous all-day coastal drive (many guests prefer a guided van); ʻĪao Valley, with its emerald spire and easy garden paths; whale watching in season (roughly November–April); and the open beaches, shops, and tours of West Maui in Kāʻanapali and Kapalua.

Right outside the resort, a flat, paved oceanfront path strolls about 1.6 miles each way past five beaches: gentle and welcoming for walkers of every pace. A lovely way to start the morning or wind down at sunset.

Just minutes away, this open-air center gathers 70-plus shops and several restaurants under the sun—an easy afternoon of browsing, dining, or gathering little supplies without ever needing to drive far.

About a 20-minute drive in Māʻalaea, Hawaiʻi's aquarium invites you to wander past living coral reefs, sharks, rays, and sea turtles. A relaxed, indoor-friendly outing—perfect even on a rainy afternoon.

Three championship courses — Gold, Emerald, and Blue — sit right next door at Wailea Golf Club, with ocean views from nearly every hole. Tee times book up ahead, so plan early. (Booked directly with the club; green fees separate.)

About 45–60 minutes up the cool green slopes of Haleakalā, the paniolo town of Makawao charms with galleries and coffee shops, while Kula's farm country offers gardens and sweeping views. A relaxed, low-key day.

A drive of roughly 2.5–3 hours climbs to the 10,000-foot summit and its otherworldly crater views. A gentle midday or afternoon visit needs no sunrise reservation—a far easier way to take in the same spectacular scenery.

FAQ
Hardly a thing! Your Featherweight arrives serviced and ready, your station is set, and the sewing supplies are all provided — so you can travel light and arrive ready to sew.
Pack for Maui more than for the sewing room: lightweight, breathable clothing for warm, sunny days, a swimsuit for the pools and beach, comfortable walking shoes for the Wailea Beach Path, a hat, sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen, and a light layer for cooler evenings and air-conditioned spaces.
If you have a favorite ¼" presser foot or seam guide, tuck it in. A few quilters also like to bring a pattern or book stand, a tabletop sewing light, or a "cushy for your tushy" for long, happy sewing sessions. A little hand sewing or a good book is lovely for the beach and poolside, too. Everything we provide is listed just below.
Everything you need, waiting at your table:
- Featherweight machine, perfectly serviced and ready to sew
- Thread Snips Rotary Cutter
- Cutting Mat
- Paca Pressing Mat
- Mini Iron
- PinsSeam Ripper
- Machine Needle
- Wonderfil Thread, neutral spool Prewound Bobbins
- Selection of ¼" presser feet & seam guides (feel free to bring your favorite, if you prefer!)
- Thread Stand or Thread Post
Leave your beautiful, treasured Featherweight at home where it's safe and sound. Every machine at the retreat is provided for you, fully serviced by The Featherweight Shop and ready for smooth sewing all week. Have questions about the machine you keep at home? Write them down before you come — Carmon and Christian will answer them one‑on‑one, so you can take notes to refer to after your trip. You can also watch the free tutorials anytime in the Featherweight Schoolhouse, at your own pace.
Shared around the sewing room, with our team close by if anything needs a tweak:
- Sewing Machine Needles
- Sew-Retro Oil & Grease
- Wera Maintenance Screwdrivers
- Bobbin Tension Meter
If you plan to sew the exclusive Hawaii Retreat quilt kit that we provide, it is precut and ready to sew—no need to prep! But if you're bringing your own project, we strongly recommend that you cut your fabric ahead of time so you can start sewing the moment you sit down.
There's so much to do! Non-sewing companions can enjoy:
- Wailea Beach and the oceanfront beach path
- The Wailea Canyon Activity Pool and the adults-only Hibiscus Serenity Pool
- Kilolani Spa treatments and the resort's hydrothermal gardens (available at additional cost)
- The fitness center and wellness classes (included with your stay)
- The Shops at Wailea, just minutes away
- Self-arranged island outings: top-rated golfing, snorkel tours, upcountry drives, and more. (Rental cars are available to rent on site at additional cost.) Note: Maui is considered a golfer's paradise with several top-ranked golf courses close to the Grand Wailea. Please observe that tee-times are available to reserve 45 days in advance. Cost varies depending on course.
- Meet & Greet: Everyone is welcome at our first evening reception!
Of course! Companions register as guests at the companion rate, share your room, and receive their own $125 nightly dining credit. They're welcome at all our group activities and can visit you in the sewing room, too — just being mindful not to disturb fellow quilters. See For Non‑Quilting Companions under Pricing for the details.
Connect with potential roommates who share your passion! Check your local quilt guild or join our Featherweight Facebook group to meet fellow quilting enthusiasts.
Prefer a room to yourself? Single occupancy is $4,995. If you register on your own without a roommate, that's the rate that applies — just choose "Room to myself" when you reserve.
Booking separately from your roommate? Each of you chooses "Sharing with a roommate" and enters the other's name when you reserve, and we'll room you together.
That's wonderful you are coming with friends—retreats are better together! Traveling with one quilting friend? Just let us know when you reserve, and the two of you will be seated together. Bringing a larger group? Tell us who's coming and we'll do our best to seat everyone together in the sewing room.
The Grand Wailea offers accessible rooms and grounds throughout the resort. If you require a handicap accessible room, let us know at time of booking as well as who is being registered as your traveling companion to accompany and assist you during your stay.
With your nightly dining credit good across the resort's restaurants — from Loulu's wellness‑focused fare to Humuhumu's fresh island seafood — you're free to choose dishes that fit your needs. Gluten‑free and vegetarian dishes are marked on every menu, and your server can walk you through the options at each meal.
Meals aren't included or reserved; instead, each guest receives a $125 per‑night food and beverage credit that can be used at most dining venues on the resort — so you eat where and when you like.
Fly into Kahului Airport (OGG) on Maui, about a 30–40 minute drive to the Grand Wailea in Wailea. Airfare and ground transportation aren't included in your package, and you have some great options:
- Private transfers — two services we recommend are AMA Transportation and PrimoVIP; both run private SUV and Sprinter‑van transfers from OGG to Wailea.
- Renting a car — the resort has its own car‑rental counter, so many guests find it easiest to transfer to the resort and then rent by the day, just when they want to explore. Renting at the airport works too; plan for the shuttle to the rental center and a line that can run up to a couple of hours at busy times.
- Parking — the resort is valet‑only, about $75–100 per day depending on tip, so a by‑the‑day rental at the resort can also be the budget‑friendly choice.
Check-in at the Grand Wailea begins at 4:00 PM, and check-out is at 11:00 AM. Arriving early or heading out late? The resort's front desk is happy to hold your luggage so you can start enjoying the grounds right away.
Urgent Care Wailea is just minutes from the resort in neighboring Kihei for everyday needs. Maui Memorial Medical Center, the island's full-service hospital, is in Wailuku, about a half-hour drive away.
Makana Gifts with Aloha, the resort's gift shop, is open daily with Made-in-Hawaii goods, sundries, and resort apparel, and the Shops at Wailea are a short stroll away for anything else.
Yes — the resort offers valet laundry and dry‑cleaning service (at additional cost).
- Airfare to and from Maui — travelers book their own flights. There are no prearranged airport transfers — see the airport question for the transfer companies we recommend.
- Valet parking, if you're parking a rental car at the resort — the resort is valet‑only (no self‑parking), about $75–100 per day depending on tip
- Extra nights before or after the retreat — a separate booking at the resort's rates
- The Grand Wailea luau — an optional add-on, about $240 per person (current rate; subject to change for 2027)
- Spa treatments at Kilolani Spa
- Meals and drinks beyond your $125 nightly dining credit, plus gratuities
- Personal purchases and extracurricular activities
Our private sewing room is open continuously from the start of the retreat until it ends. Sew whenever you feel inspired!
Tap Reserve Your Spot below and put down your $500 deposit per person — $100 of it non‑refundable — and your place is held. Traveling with someone? Add their name when you reserve. If your roommate is registering separately, choose "Sharing with a roommate" and enter their name so we can put you together. You'll also tell us whether you're a quilter or a non‑quilting companion, and whether you'd like one king bed or two queens.
Yes — it's all included! Your oceanview room, five nights, the $125 nightly dining credit, resort fee, and all taxes are bundled into one per‑person price. There's nothing to book separately with the resort.
Prices are per person with two to a room; a room to yourself (single occupancy) is $4,995.
Your $500 deposit holds your place when you reserve. A $695 second payment is due September 30, 2026, and the balance is due May 2, 2027 — we'll send reminders ahead of each date. The full schedule is in the Terms & Conditions below.
Each guest must register separately and pay his or her own deposit. That keeps everyone's reservation, room, and dining credit on record under the right name.
No — Featherweight Sewciety Rewards points, discount codes, and gift cards aren't eligible for Featherweight Shop event fees, including the Featherweights Aloha Retreat deposit and reservation.
It's for your payment, not your mail. Card processing uses your billing and shipping address to verify the card securely — nothing for the retreat is shipped to you.
Our exclusive Pineapple Scrap‑Apple Quilt Kit — laser‑cut and ready to sew, so you can start piecing as soon as you're settled. Prefer to work on something different? Bring it fully prepped and cut, and you'll be stitching right along beside your new Hawaiian quilty friends.
There's no pop‑up shop to browse — we pack everything you'll need. We'll send a list of the supplies used at the retreat so you can browse the website beforehand, add anything for your machine to your cart, and have the package waiting when you get home. That leaves more room in your suitcase for Featherweight swag and Hawaiian souvenirs.
There are local quilt shops nearby we can't wait for you to see, too — authentic Hawaiian fabric included!
Yes. Every station comes with its own cutting mat, pressing mat, and iron — and we'll also set out a couple of larger cutting stations and full‑size irons for everyone to share as needed.
Details coming very soon — we're working out the logistics with the resort right now. Your deposit holds your retreat spot either way, and we'll post the extended-stay details here as soon as they're settled.

- $695 second payment by September 30, 2026
- $2,500 final payment by May 2, 2027
Non‑quilting companions ($3,195 total — per person, based on double occupancy):

- $695 second payment by September 30, 2026
- $3,800 final payment by May 2, 2027
At registration each guest tells us whether they are a quilter or a non‑quilting companion, their bed preference (one king or two queens), and — if rooming with someone who registers separately — that roommate's name.
Payments may be made at any time before their due dates. The credit card you supply at registration will be charged per this schedule unless prior arrangements have been made. If the final payment is not received on time, the hotel may cancel the reservation.
A few things are yours to arrange and pay for directly:
- Travel to and from Hawaiʻi — airfare is booked on your own, so you can choose the flights, dates, and routing that suit you best.
- Travel to and from the resort — airport transfers, rental cars, and any transportation around the island. AMA Transportation and PrimoVIP both run private transfers from the airport (more in the FAQ).
- Parking — applies only if you rent a car: the resort is valet‑only, about $75–100 per day depending on tip, billed by the resort and not included in your registration. A rental car isn't required — the beach, gardens, golf, restaurants, and shopping are all connected by beachfront pathways, so many guests simply shuttle in and out.
- Extra nights — arriving early or staying past the retreat dates is a separate booking at the resort's rates, not part of your retreat price.
- Room incidentals — anything charged to your room beyond the package, such as meals and drinks past your nightly dining credit, spa treatments, the luau, in‑room purchases, and gratuities.
- Personal purchases and activities — excursions, golf, shopping, and other extras you choose to add.
By reserving, you acknowledge that these items are not included in your retreat price and are settled directly with the resort or provider.
From the time of registration, $100 of your deposit is non‑refundable. After that, the non‑refundable portion of your total price increases as the retreat approaches:
- October 1, 2026 — 30% non‑refundable
- May 3, 2027 — 50% non‑refundable
- August 1, 2027 — 80% non‑refundable
- October 1, 2027 — 100% non‑refundable
Each guest is responsible for having all required documentation. A valid photo ID is required for all US citizens; a passport and/or visa is required for all international travelers. All guests assume full responsibility for confirming passport, visa, vaccination, and other entry requirements, and the safety and security conditions of Hawaiʻi. The Featherweight Shop has no control over taxes and resort fees; should they increase, your invoice will reflect the increase.
The Featherweight Shop takes your privacy seriously and will be responsible with your contact information. It will never be sold, traded, or given away, and is provided only to the hotel or travel supplier as required for reservation purposes.
By registering, you consent to The Featherweight Shop photographing and filming during the event, and to our use of photos and videos that may include you in our marketing.
The Featherweight Shop acts solely as a general booking agent on behalf of each customer for the purpose of processing reservations with travel suppliers.
