Description

We are very excited to add this lovely 1934 Featherweight 221 to the site; AD783*** indicates a commission date of November 27th, 1934.  Completely serviced, cleaned, polished, electrically inspected, timed, tuned and sampled - rest assured, this Featherweight 221 will be ready to sew right out of the case.  This machine is fitted with an original 110 volt motor that has been rewound to work at optimum speed and torque, so you can plug it in and begin sewing with effortless power.  This 221's decals are in very good condition, and the machine has been given a grade 7.  You will notice that there are a few chips near the back of the machine.  We have observed these on other 1934 Featherweights, but we are unsure as to why they are there.

Included with this machine is its original rare and unique January 1934 manual.  During this time period Singer was transitioning over to the type 2 machine case like this 221 has.  In each original manual is a diagram of how to pack the case, and Singer had to update the diagram in some of the Jan. 1934 editions when the new cases came out.  Instead of throwing away the old manuals they glued a replacement page over the previous diagram showing the type 1 case.  If you hold page 7 of this manual up to the light, you can see the previous page underneath.  This machine does have one of those unique original manuals!

Some of the distinctions of the early Featherweights compared to the later models are: the non-numbered tension unit, the front mount bobbin winder, and the split base at the right side of the machine under the receptacle. These features evolved over the next couple of years until the more common characteristics were developed.

You can also rest knowing that the Original Bobbin Case is most definitely included, assuring you of an original quality stitch all these years later.  It is a delightful thought to think about some of the possible things that were lovingly sewn on this machine in its lifetime.  What will you add to its sewing repertoire - quilts? Apparel?  Whatever you sew, I’m sure your new Featherweight machine will be well loved for many, many more years of sewing life.

This machine has been serviced and calibrated for quilter’s cottons, so you won’t have to worry about tension when you receive it.

This would be an excellent machine to add to your Featherweight collection.
