Shop Talk: Sweet Tart Zippered Pouch
by Tammy Olson

Welcome back to Shop Talk here at The Featherweight Shop! We love our local chit chat with staff, gathering around the dinette table so-to-speak (because that is what we have!) and sharing with one another. In these segments, we exchange patterns, recipes, organizational ideas, history quips, crafty projects, and smiles about learning an old-fashioned way of doing things. Shop Talk is the fun tidbits of news!

SHOP TALK SWEET TART
Tammy, our Shop Talk project maker, is recounting her process of creating this cheerful Sweet Tart Pouch!

The first step was to cut out all the various pieces from the sweet cherry and polka dot material! It was like gathering all the ingredients to bake a cake!

The first thing to tackle was the Dresden, as I had never made one before, and it was a little intimidating to think about whether it would turn out all right. I headed in and it turned out lovely!

Chain Piecing Steps
Chain piecing made the assembly go much faster and pressing the petals was very satisfying. It was even a little stress relieving to see the pieces pressed so nicely and uniform.

All the pieces came together to make the sweetest little cherry Dresden.

The next step was to create the perfect circle to hand sew onto the center of the Dresden. This was more easily accomplished with a little help from the directions in the Mini Dresden Plate Kit Pattern.

I hand sewed the Dresden to the red and white polka dot material to create the front after using the Quilt Basting Spray to tack the dresden on

Next was working with the zipper. It is always so rewarding to sew the zipper in and then slowly and carefully snip out the basting stitches to reveal the actual zipper and voila! There it is! And it works!

Using red thread, I quilted the back of the lined pouch as desired.
I sewed on the zipper pull tabs and attached the gusset to the zipper.

Before I began working on the pouch, it looked a little overwhelming, but by following the directions and piecing and sewing it together slowly, just one step at a time, it all went so well! I pinned and sewed, and pinned and sewed until the pouch was a whole piece.

I sewed the inside basting around to secure it, then rolled it over the raw edges and sewed it in place completing the inside of the pouch.
