Blocks 36, 37, & 38 (Simple, Spring & Summer Star Blocks) - Farm Girl Vintage Quilt & Featherweight Shop Sew Along

Farm Girl Vintage Sew Along This is the month of stars!  Perfect timing as we often get to view the stars and gorgeous constellations on late summer nights. We are continuing with three gorgeous star blocks as we approach the finish line for our Farm Girl Vintage Sampler quilt.  Simple, Spring & Summer are our featured blocks this month.  The biggest take away while sewing these was squaring up each unit as you stitched each section of your block.  It made a world of difference for accuracy and block size, so let's get started... Psssst! If you're just joining us...

Blocks 33, 34, & 35 (Postage Stamp, Scrappy Maple, & Scrappy Strawberry) - Farm Girl Vintage Quilt & Featherweight Shop Sew Along

Farm Girl Vintage Sew Along Hello!  And, how has your summer been?  Ours has been flying by... especially since we had such a late spring, the extremely warm summer weather is now suddenly upon us!  Thankfully, the warmer weather outside affords us time to cool off inside all the while being productive by continuing to sew our Farm Girl Vintage blocks.  I've been able to do quite a bit of cutting ahead and it feels great to just sew the next block because it's all set and ready.  And, it makes me feel like we are approaching the finish line...

Blocks 30, 31 & 32 (Peas & Carrots, Pie Cherries & Pinwheels) - Farm Girl Vintage Quilt & Featherweight Shop Sew Along

Farm Girl Vintage Sew Along This was a very exciting Farm Girl Vintage post!  First, be sure to visit our Retreat Flashback blog post from June 2019, when we were in McCall, Idaho for an entire week of Featherweights and Lori Holt Farm Girl Vintage!  I know -- it was hard to believe myself, but it's true... Ruthie, Wendy, and I, along with nearly 50 other quilters and their Featherweights, were all sewing blocks under the tutelage of Lori Holt herself!  We even received a few sneak peek blocks for her Farm Girl Vintage 2 book coming out in a...

Blocks 27, 28 & 29 (Old Red Barn, Out to Pasture & Patchwork Pumpkin) - Farm Girl Vintage Quilt & Featherweight Shop Sew Along

Farm Girl Vintage Sew Along I have been waiting to sew this barn for quite a long time - in fact, since 2015, when the Farm Girl Vintage book first came out and when I saw all the blocks displayed in a Spokane quilt shop.  The barn block they had hanging on a cute little line was made with this darling red fabric, but sadly the shop didn't have any left.  The store clerk was so sweet, though... she went digging in the shop's scraps to give me all she had left -- just enough to make this block!  Thus,...

Blocks 24, 25 & 26 (Hen, Milking Day & Old Glory Flag) - Farm Girl Vintage Quilt & Featherweight Shop Sew Along

Farm Girl Vintage Sew Along For our geographic area, we have officially entered what many locals call the "mud season" - that time of year when the weather can't decide to pour down rain to the point of flooding or grace us with a warm sunny afternoon.  In this time of weather flip flop, and when I need a sewing break from rubber galoshes and weeding, these Farm Girl Vintage one-by-one blocks are perfect for keeping my interest and excited about the "what do I get to sew next?!"  For April we get to sew: the Hen, Milk Can and...

Farm Girl Vintage Quilt & Featherweight Shop Sew Along - Blocks 13 & 14 (Egg Basket & Farm Fresh Flower)

Blocks 13 & 14 are our featured blocks - Egg Basket and Farm Fresh Flower blocks! The Farm Girl Vintage Quilt Sew Along with the Featherweight Shop continues.... This was indeed the Christmas season, yet a few of us Featherweight Shop diehards still got together to work on our blocks.  We waited until after our big annual sale, but we had fun discussing that when we increase to three blocks, that means we are half way through with sewing our quilt top! Both Ruthie and April opted to make a yellow and brown basket, featuring a more "realistic" or natural-colored...

Farm Girl Vintage Quilt & Featherweight Shop Sew Along - Blocks 11 & 12 (Country Crossroads & Crops)

Block 11 & 12 are our featured blocks - Country Crossroads and Crops blocks!  The Farm Girl Vintage Quilt Sew Along with the Featherweight Shop continues.... After laying out all my blocks I noticed that mine are needing a bit more pops of red for balance.  Thus, I decided to incorporate some red 30s prints for the Country Crossroads block.   But, when it came to constructing my Crops block, I ended up grabbing the little white corner square pieces from the wrong pile creating some assymetrical crops. Can you see my errors?  I decided to keep them and just...

Farm Girl Vintage Quilt & Featherweight Shop Sew Along - Block 9 & 10 (Cool Threads & Corn and Tomatoes)

Block 9 & 10 are our featured blocks - Cool Threads and Corn & Tomatoes!  The Farm Girl Vintage Quilt Sew Along with the Featherweight Shop continues; block 9 was a lot of fun to be creative with the thread spools!  Ruthie had the idea of using a light brown fabric print for wooden spools and I liked it so much I decided to copy her design.  Block 10 was the perfect block to add some bright red color and coordinate with the yellow, being creative with the various vintage style prints.  If you're just now joining us for...

Farm Girl Vintage Quilt & Featherweight Sew Along - Block 7 & 8 (Chicken Foot & Churn Dash)

Block 7 & 8 are both being featured today... Chicken Foot and Churn Dash are the two blocks for the Farm Girl Vintage Quilt Sew Along with the Featherweight Shop!  Block 7 has a number of pieces forming the "Chicken Foot"; it turns out so cute all sewn together in tiny detail.  Block 8 is one of my all-time favorites because it's a thirties classic - the "Churn Dash".  It sews together fairly simply and brings quick satisfaction.  So, how did you all do?  I'd say I spent a couple of hours (attempting those points!) on the Chicken Foot...

Farm Girl Vintage Quilt & Featherweight Sew Along - Block 4 (Baking Day)

Yay!  It's so much fun to be moving right along with these Farm Girl Vintage blocks by Lori Holt... When cutting out block 3 (Baby Chick), I loved the colors so much that I decided to make cutting easy and continue with the colors of pink, yellow and red.  My great-grandmother had a "big yellow bowl" that she used for making bread.  That bowl was handed down to my mom and then to me.  Therefore, for me, it only seemed apropos for the larger mixing bowl of "Baking Day" block 5 to be yellow as well. Ruthie changed hers up...

Farm Girl Vintage Quilt & Featherweight Sew Along - Block 3 (Baby Chick)

Today, we are featuring block 3 of the Farm Girl Vintage Sew Along at the Featherweight Shop!  Last block we learned about pressing seams open and cutting accurately when we sewed Block 2, Autum Star.  This installment we will be adding a small, but new technique to our blocks with simple embroidery for the chick's little legs and eye.  So, grab your fabric, get it prepared and cut and let's enjoy some more Featherweight sewing!    Cutting was fairly straight forward and easy this month, so I ended up cutting for both Ruthie's and my block. Don't forget to sew a...

Farm Girl Vintage Quilt & Featherweight Sew Along - Block 2 (Autumn Star)

Today, we are featuring block 2 of the Farm Girl Vintage Sew Along at the Featherweight Shop!  Many of us began by learning some of the quilting basics as the first block, Apron Strings, was completed.  Many gained new confidence while preparing, cutting and sewing block 2, the Autumn Star.    Ruthie picked out fabric for both her block and mine with the only variation being the center teal and corner green floral prints. Lori Holt's instructions are always so clear and concise, even a beginner quilter can quickly learn the art of quilting by using her patterns.  While this...

Farm Girl Vintage Quilt & Featherweight Sew Along - Block 1 (Apron Strings)

Today is the beginning of our Farm Girl Vintage Sew Along at the Featherweight Shop!  The gals were eagerly anticipating this gathering after all packages were ric-rac tied and shipped because today we are featuring the start of a new quilt - some of us for the very first time.  Awww, sweet Wendy... She's already settling in and becoming comfortable with quilt-making that she's beginning to teach and help others... we love it! The nice thing about Lori Holt's books and patterns is that scrappy prints and fabrics work so well.  Today's block, "Apron Strings", was ideal for pulling a...

Featherweight Shop Sew Along - Farm Girl Vintage Quilt

This past week, the Featherweight shop staff met and chose the Farm Girl Vintage Quilt Book as our next sew along.  The quilt is adorable and appeals to many styles, the blocks are smaller at 6 1/2" square and will be fairly simple to construct (especially with Lori Holt's wonderful instructions), and each block will be easy to find fabric for (scraps on hand, charm packs, fat quarter bundle, complete kits, etc.) making it manageable on any fabric budget!  (photo credit: Lori Holt of Bee In My Bonnet)    KITS AVAILABLE HERE We would all love to have you join us! ...
