We are very excited to be working on the continuation of our Featherweight Shop's Farm Girl Vintage Sew Along! If you're just now joining us, welcome! We began the sew along doing one block at a time so that new quilters could learn before we picked up speed. So, you'll have plenty of time to catch up and sew along with us. Simply jump in now at Blocks 15, 16 & 17 with our featured blocks: Farmhouse, Feed and Seed, and Fresh Pears, and then fill in with the other earlier blocks as you can! You can do it!
When we started the sew along on our Featherweights, little did we know that Lori Holt was working hard behind the scenes to create a darling Farm Girl Vintage fabric line for Riley Blake Designs... We couldn't have been more surprised and pleased with the timing! As such, we decided to include "Farm Girl Vintage" fabrics in our new fabric category, even creating a quilt kit for those of you who want all the lovely fabrics to begin your Farm Girl Vintage quilt.
Grab your book, some fabric, get it prepared and cut, and let's enjoy some more Featherweight sewing!
Complete your blocks following along with the pattern, paying attention to a couple of tips in the photos below. Make sure to press your block seams open (when you can), being careful to be as exact with your cutting and alignments as possible.
Using the top edge of the Creative Grids Corner Clipper ruler you can align the edge just perfectly to pre-trim before sewing! (just like we did last month)
Then your pieces will be all set and ready to use the Featherweight Accurate Seam Guide to sew a perfect quarter inch seam. (I prefer a scant 1/4" for more point accuracy.)
Pin, pin, pin! Yes, you probably noticed right away that I'm one of those that sews over my pins, but know it is only with caveat.... the pins must be super, super fine. (I've only found one kind to be this fine, and you can find them here.) But, if prefer to pull your pins before sewing over them, that is always a good habit.
There are a lot of pieces in the Farmhouse block, so take it slow, one piece at a time. Lay it out and plan it one. step. at. a. time.
Ruthie was having fun laying out her pieces first to get a visual for how her block would come together.
Feed and Seed Block laid out before sewing together.
{I'll have to take more photos for February because I seem to have misplaced the final photos of Ruthie's two blocks.}
April's Feed & Seed Block
As you know, we meet once a month for #featherweightfellowship with the employees to sew, work on our blocks, learn new techniques and just chit chat for a little while. This month, Lou brought some striped fabric and was showing us how to cut and piece them together to create a fun effect. This sew along is all about having Featherweight Fellowship, so we enjoy seeing what we all are making!
After sewing her Farmhouse, Lori worked on her Pears block.
Notice her cute teapot fussy cutting for the door -- so sweet! This is Lori's first quilt and it is so incredible to see how much she has learned and enjoying the process of sewing these blocks together. I am very excited to see her quilt all finished!
Phew! We did it! Three blocks with lots of little pieces are now under our belt. In looking over the year, I think this was our biggest hurdle to cross and we did it! However, if you're like me, and need to seam rip a piece or two, then you may find this quick video tutorial with Ruthie and me helpful. There is a rather efficient way of using a seam ripper and if you're careful as you guide it along, you can rip those seams and pull those threads quickly!
Until next Featherweight Farm Girl Vintage Quilt Sew Along...
NOTE: Now that we are in the swing of things and becoming more familiar with Lori Holt's Farm Girl Vintage quilt block style, we will continue sewing threeblocks. Thus, we will feature Block 18 Furrows, Block 19 Gingham, and Block 20 Grandma's Quilt next. Pace yourself knowing we've been working on these together!
