Description

This 1948 Singer Featherweight 221K is stunning in brandywine with gold decals! Completely restored inside and out - this Featherweight 221 will be ready to sew (or display) right out of the case. This machine is fitted with an original, Bakelite 220-volt motor that has been rewound to work at optimum speed and torque. Click on any image above to view the beauty and restoration quality. EE856*** indicates an original commission date of December 10th, 1948; it's 75th birthday is in just a few days!

1947 was the first year that Featherweights were produced in the UK. A 1948 like this one still has a couple distinctions being near the beginning of UK production. The motor has a Bakelite band with a gold colored 'S'. These motors were the first ones issued on Featherweights produced in the UK and they were still used in the December 10th, 1948 batch of machines. On this particular band some cloudy fading can be seen, and in this case it reveals that the motor got very hot at some point in the machine's history. The inside of the motor looked like it had possibly even caught fire! We have completely restored/replaced those damaged parts, so the motor is now rewound and functions perfectly, but we reinstalled that original band to maintain a connection to this machine's blazing past.

The other early style feature is the case's leather handle and the latches that match the latches on most USA cases. Those two things make this case look just like a USA type IV case from the outside, but the lining on the inside of the case has the distinct pattern that was used on many UK cases.
